I have reposted this report from the Western Region section of this general meeting for your convenience:
I would like to report on the success of our 14th Annual Joint Southern California STTI Chapter's Odyssey 2009 Conference which was held in Ontario California on November 12th and 13th. The conference was sponsored by the following STTI chapters/Schools: Gamma Alpha/Loma Linda University; Gamma Gamma/San Diego State University; Gamma Tau @ Large/UCLA and CSU Northridge; Iota Eta/CSU Long Beach; Iota Sigma/Azusa Pacific University; Nu Mu/CSU Los Angeles; Omicron Delta/University of Phoenix; Phi Alpha/Western University of Health Sciences; Rho Beta/ CSU San Bernardino; Zeta Mu @ large/ University of San Diego and Point Loma Nazarene University; Upsilon Beta/CSU Fullerton; Xi Theta/CSU Dominquez Hills; CSU San Marcos Honor. The conference theme was "Caring and Connection Through Technology” and we were honored to have Dr. Karin Morin, President of the Honor Society of Nursing, STTI, present our Thursday keynote ”Using Technology to Facilitate Caring and Connection”. Research, Innovative Projects and Educational Sessions were presented over both days. Our planning committee chair, Dr. Mikel Hand, opened the conference with a welcome from Illinois via Skype and avid Odyssey Supporter, Dr. Jan Nick participated in Thursday’s panel discussion from Japan utilizing Skype. Over two hundred individuals attended the conference on Thursday and Friday with 50% nursing student representation.
Our chapter has participated in the planning and conduct of this conference for over ten years. Nancy Stuever, our past president, initiated our chapter’s collaboration with consortium and various members including myself, Marilyn Klakovich, Mikel Hand and Linda Seale have served as planning committee members. Many of our members, including Pam Fuller, Sandra Wise, and Carol Bauer have reviewed research abstracts for the committee and a variety of chapter members have reviewed innovative abstracts to support this annual conference. Darlene Bradley, Rosemary Haggins and I have served as poster judges for several of the conferences. Nancy Stuever presented her research findings this year as well as participated in a panel discussion related to technology in the ‘classroom’. I have seen this conference improve year after year with increasing support and attendance. I want to extend my appreciation to our members who have contributed to the success of this collaborate conference this year and in previous years.
This is an annual conference, held each fall in Southern California. Our 2010 conference will be in the San Diego the end of November. Please watch the exact dates and location of the conference as well as the Call for Abstracts on our OD and STTI's websites. This conference presents a variety of opportunities for you to increase your involvement in the Honor Society of Nursing. If you would like to review abstracts (research or innovative) let me know and I will submit your name to the planning committee. Submit an abstract for consideration for podium or poster presentation; these may be research or innovative projects. In addition to attending the conference there are opportunities to volunteer including moderating and poster judging. Come, get involved! Contact me if you have questions, or I can assist you in any way.
